What Is Floatation Therapy
Floatation therapy, also known as sensory deprivation or REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy), is a research-backed wellness practice that offers a range of physical and psychological benefits. During a session, the body floats effortlessly in a warm solution of Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate), eliminating the effects of gravity and allowing deep muscular relaxation. Studies have shown that this state can significantly reduce cortisol levels, lowering stress and anxiety. Regular floatation has also been associated with improvements in sleep quality, due to the calming effect on the nervous system and enhanced production of serotonin and melatonin.
Evidence suggests that floatation therapy can aid in pain relief for conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic tension headaches, and muscle soreness, likely due to its impact on reducing inflammation and improving circulation. Athletes often use floatation to accelerate recovery by supporting lactic acid reduction and enhancing muscle regeneration. Cognitive benefits have also been observed, including improved focus, heightened creativity, and reduced symptoms of depression. Overall, floatation therapy offers a holistic, evidence-informed approach to restoring physical balance and mental clarity in a modern world of overstimulation.

Preparation
To get the most out of your floatation therapy experience, a little preparation goes a long way. It’s recommended to avoid caffeine and other stimulants for at least a few hours beforehand, as they can make it harder to fully relax. Try not to eat a large meal immediately before your session, but don’t arrive hungry either—a light meal about an hour prior is ideal. Avoid shaving or waxing on the day of your float, as the high concentration of Epsom salts may irritate freshly shaved skin or minor cuts.

Temple door provide everything you need, including towels, earplugs, body wash, and hair dryers, but feel free to bring your own toiletries and any post-float comforts such as a change of clothes or hairbrush.
It's common practice to float nude to eliminate distractions and maintain hygiene, but you can wear swimwear if that makes you more comfortable. You’ll shower before and after your float, so plan accordingly.

For your safety and the cleanliness of the tank, do not float if you have open wounds, contagious skin conditions, or recently applied spray tans or fresh hair dye, as these can contaminate the water and affect your experience.
If you are pregnant (especially in the second or third trimester), floatation can be wonderfully relieving—but it’s always best to check with your healthcare provider first. Those with medical conditions such as epilepsy, heart conditions, or low blood pressure should also seek medical advice before floating.

The float environment is designed to be extremely calming and low-stimulation, but if you're claustrophobic or prone to anxiety, let the staff know—they can guide you through options like keeping the lid open or lights on.
After your float, take your time transitioning back into the world—many people report a deeply meditative or altered state, so it's helpful to sit quietly for a few minutes, hydrate, and avoid rushing off to demanding tasks straight away.

With just a little preparation, floatation therapy can be a deeply restorative experience for body and mind.
